F2k: Resource centre for physics teaching and learning
What is F2k? The general aim of the F2k centre is to promote understanding of and interest in physics and technology among Finns. This aim is approached primarily by developing physics education; the centre operates within Physics Teacher Education in the Department of Physics of the University of Helsinki. Our focus is on experimental physics teaching and learning at every level of education: from primary schools, secondary schools, high schools and vocational education to further education and free-choice learning. We offer a variety of activities, events and personal support for teachers and students, for the children and young and for the general public.
History In the beginning of the 1980s the Department of Physics organised the first summer schools in contemporary research for science teachers. Due to their popularity, the tradition continued. Since then we have expanded the selection of courses, events and target groups. The resource centre F2k (then "Kondensaattori") was officially opened in the spring of 2006. Current focus Experimentation is the heart of physics, and thereby also of physics education. Thus, experimental knowledge construction and motivational experimentation are the primary focuses of the F2k centre. Currently the most salient activity is the F2k-laboratory which was opened in December 2010. The F2k-laboratory offers hands-on experiments in modern physics for upper secondary school teachers and students. F2k also emphasises the use of the history and philosophy of science to support physics teaching and learning, and technology and nanotechnology in the context of physics education. The themes emphasised in the activities of F2k reflect the research projects of the Physics Teacher Education and the other research projects of the Department of Physics. Funding & Co-operation F2k is financed mainly by The Faculty of Science of the University of Helsinki. The co-partners of F2k come from the education administration, business and industry, industrial organisations, municipalities, research centres, the Faculty of Biosciences, the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences, the Helsinki University of Technology and naturally from the schools.
