Nord-HPS&ST 2: the 2nd Nordic Meeting on History and Philosophy of Science in Science Teaching

The Department of Physics, University of Helsinki, will host the Nord-HPS&ST 2, the 2nd Nordic Meeting on History and Philosophy of Science in Science Teaching on October 24-26, 2012 on the Kumpula campus in Helsinki (where the first meeting was held in October 2009). The symposium concentrates on questions, how to promote better science teaching and better scientific literacy in all levels of education by making students informed by the history, philosophy, and sociology of science. In particular, the symposium attempts to discuss and find ways to implement these aspects of knowledge and knowledge formation into teacher-education programmes.

The second meeting has a special theme of Conceptual Change in Learning Sciences: The perspective of cognition, history and philosophy. Presentations on this topic are particularly welcome. For more information from the symposium, contact Dr. Ismo Koponen (ismo.koponen@helsinki.fi).

Invited speakers of the symposium are:

Prof. Agustin Aduriz-Bravo, Autonomous University of Buenos Aires, Argentina
Prof. Dietmar Höttecke, University of Bremen, Germany
Prof. Kai Hakkarainen, University of Turku, Finland
Prof. Ola Halldén, University of Stockholm, Sweden
Adj Prof. Arto Mutanen, National Defense University, Helsinki, Finland

We hope that many of our Nordic colleagues and colleagues abroad will attend the symposium and thus help us to strengthen the Nordic collaboration in the area of philosophy and history of science in science education.

Concurrently with the meeting, the Nordic Research School NorsEd has a research school on HPS on Science Education.

The deadline for abstracts has been extended to 15th June. Abstracts will be reviewed and notification of accepted abstracts will be sent before 30th June. Abstracts can be sent directly to Ismo Koponen (ismo.koponen@helsinki.fi).

Posters are welcome, and also those participants having a talk are encouraged to bring posters to enhance discussion. When sending the abstracts, please mention if you intend to present a poster.

If you need more information, please contact Dr. Ismo Koponen.
